At Dunn Orthodontics, we understand that managing discomfort during orthodontic treatment is important. We want to give you information so you can make choices you feel comfortable with—and always in consultation with your healthcare provider.
Understanding Pain Relief Options
When braces are adjusted, or when new appliances are put in place, some discomfort or soreness is normal. There are different kinds of pain relief options people often use, some of which help reduce inflammation in addition to helping with pain, and others which are primarily for easing pain itself. The best option for you depends on your overall health, any medical conditions, and other medications you may be taking.
What You Can Do
Use the over-the-counter pain relief option you feel safe using, following the instructions on the label (or packaging), and any guidance from your physician.
Apply cold compresses, soft diet, or gentle rinses (with warm salt water) to help reduce soreness and swelling.
Maintain good oral hygiene to prevent additional irritation, which can make pain worse.
Talking With Your Physician
Because there are many factors—health history, allergies, other medications, etc.—it’s important to:
Discuss your pain-relief plan with your healthcare provider before using anything new.
Ask about possible side effects or interactions.
Find out what dosage and timing are safe for you personally.
What to Expect
Some discomfort after orthodontic adjustments is to be expected, but in most cases it becomes much more manageable after the first few days. If your pain doesn’t improve, worsens, or you have additional concerns (swelling, fever, etc.), please reach out to your healthcare provider.
